Paint Correction, Cut & Polish, Machining, Polishing, Glaze, Compounding, Wax, Buffing, Sealant, Finishing, Cleaner Wax etc…

These terms and others are used a lot when discussing car detailing. They are often used without any regard to their true meaning and this makes it difficult for people to know which services they require. Hopefully this article will clear things up.

Paint Correction – What is it and why would you want it?

Paint correction does not involve respraying, touch-ups or physical repair of dented, torn or smashed panels / bumpers. For this type of work you need to talk to a Smash Repairer.

Paint correction is the process of improving the finish of your vehicles paint. This is done by using abrasives in varying grades to level the clear coat that sits on top of the cars paint. It can be performed by hand but is mostly done with a machine ie a DA / Buffer / Orbital / Rotary polisher. Heavier defect removal may also involve wet-sanding prior to compounding or polishing.

When performed correctly, Paint Correction will remove defects and in many cases it will improve the paint finish of brand new vehicles.

Paint Correction – Paint Defects

Paint defects include marring, scratches, swirls, spiderwebs, stone chips, etching, buffer trails and holograms. These are caused by both environmental and mechanical forces and will require either single or multi stage paint correction to repair.

Paint defects could be caused by someone brushing against your vehicles paint with their shopping or leaning on your car. They could also be caused by leaving surface contaminants unchecked and also by incorrectly washing or polishing your car.

Paint Correction - Paint Defects

Paint Correction – Surface Contamination

Surface contamination includes bird-droppings, tar, iron fallout, tree sap, water spots, bug-splatter etc and for the most part surface contamination is unavoidable. If you own a car, it will be exposed to contaminants. Park in a garage and dust will settle on your paint, park outside on the street and it will get rained on, birds will poo on it and iron fallout from other vehicles will settle on the paint.

If surface contaminants are left to dwell on a vehicles paint they will likely turn into a defect. To remove surface contaminants, chemical and or mechanical decontamination will be required – this is NOT paint correction.

Paint Protection

To protect your vehicle from environmental surface contaminants, it is recommended to use a “sacrificial layer” such as a waxes, sealants, ceramic coatings or PPF (paint protection film).

So what should you choose?

If you want to prevent defects, you need a decent sealant and or wax at a minimum.

If you want to remove defects, you want paint correction. Prior to paint correction you need a thorough clean and decontamination.

If you want to hide defects, you could possibly make do with a thorough clean, decontamination and application of a glaze – this is a popular option for those trying to sell a vehicle.
